A Brooklyn Pie Social: The Winner!

First-time pie baker, and PS29 parent, Stephen Park won this past weekend’s pie contest with this Coconut Cream Pie:

This pie doesn't look like an amateur effort. Nice work, Stephen!

Believe it or not, this was Stephen’s first pie (OK, he baked the same recipe last week as a test). When he isn’t baking, Stephen is teaching meditation classes to stressed out parents and teachers at the school. Oh, and acting in the recent Coen Brother’s film A Serious Man. He logged onto epicurious when he heard about the contest and figured, hey…people like Coconut Cream Pie. Stephen told me he is very good at following directions. A Brooklyn Pie Social: Top Chef/F&W’s Gail Simmons

You know your school’s fundraiser is a step above the average PTA’s when the pie contest is judged by senior staff from Food & Wine.

The first round of judges included parents and teachers from PS29& PS8. They chose winners from each category: fruity, nutty, sweet/creamy and savory. After that went down, the big guns arrived to choose a champion. F&W’s Publisher Christina Baltz, Restaurant Editor Kate Krader and Special Projects honcho/Top Chef judge Gail Simmons tasted each of the finalists and chose a winner (Brooklyn Borough Pres. Marty Markowitz showed up after the judging, but the man loves a photo-op). Read on for a pie Q&A with Gail:

A Brooklyn Pie Social: The Social

Today was the pie social at PS 29 here in Brooklyn. I found out about from the fine people at Brooklyn Based and had to enter. Bake pie, support education and then eat pie…how could I resist?

There were about 50 or so pies entered into the competition and about 100 or so in total for the social. If you’ve never been to a pie social here is how it works: people donate tons of pies and then sell them by the slice to eager hordes for a good cause (in this case PS29 and PS 8).
